REVIEW

Thanks to the hit Netflix series Wednesday, the Adams Family is back in the limelight

Have you ever wondered what Wednesday Addams would be like as an advice columnist? I dreadfully do! Thus Iphigenia Jones channels her inner Wednesday answering pondering questions from those seeking advice in the field of social life, romance, career, and matters of the home and hearth. All by answering them in the Addams Family way.

What unfolds will tickle the darkest of hearts. I loved that Ms. Jones has to be intermediately be reminded by her lawyers that the Addams Way, such as advising to frame your rude aunt for attempted murder( Neglected Niece letter) might be a bit much, but oh my would Wednesday be proud.

Iphigenia Jones delivers a tasty hold until season 2 with What Would Wednesday Do? Jones writes in spot-on macabre, deadpan delight as per Wednesday and her family the Addams would. What Would Wednesday Do is a devilish delight to read that does creator Charles Addams proud.

My rating is 5 finger snaps.

Hosted by Indie Promotions and RR Book Tours

Most London socialites dream of marrying for love or status, but Contessa’s wedding is about justice—and revenge.

Nathanial Woodrow is known on the streets of London as the Beast, leader of the fearsome Lion gang who marks their victims with three slashes on their faces. Since her mother was found dead with the signature slashes years ago, Contessa has wanted nothing more than to see her murderer brought to justice. However, the Beast has been impeccable at maintaining his façade as the high society Mr. Nathanial Woodrow, and nobody has been able to gather enough evidence to convict him. When the Beast unexpectedly asks Contessa’s father, the Chief of the Royal Police, for her hand in marriage, Contessa and her father hatch a plan to bring him down from the inside.

As Contessa enters the lion’s den in search of evidence to convict the Beast, she finds that not everything is as she once thought. Her father’s work, hunting down Talented that use their magic to rule the criminal underworld, is thrown into question with each glimpse of the kind-hearted man beneath the mask of a hardened gang leader. Review

I previously spotlighted this book in my Thursday Book Spotlight. So, when I got offered a chance to review it I was like yay! Yes, please (A big thanks to Mrs. Grayson and RR Book Tours for gifting me a copy)!

Take a dash of Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, tossed in with some Bridgerton meets Peaky Blinders and you have Beauty and the Blade. Forget the poetics though as upon the first page you dive right in as we meet Contessa about the get married to the “Beast” (Due to his scared face) Nathaniel Woodrow, known on the streets as the leader of the notorious street gang the Lions. Her mission is to get proof and revenge on the man who is said to of murdered her mother. In Contessa’s attempt for evidence, she learns that trust is proven through actions not words as everything Contessa once thought may not be right.

Beauty and the Blade is a cozy read. I love fairy tales and fairy tale retellings all the more. Grayson does a splendid job on my beloved Beauty and the Beast. Set in industrialized London and replaces an enchanted curse with what the town folks call the “Cursed” or “Talented.” Think X-men mutants and you kind of get the idea.

I love how Grayson throws us right into the thick of it on the first page with Contessa’s wedding of doom then sets everything down to a simmer as the rest slowly unfolds. There are plot twists, and some action moments, yet it all runs at a simmering pace. I wanted Grayson to crank up the stove a bit, but then that would make Beauty and the Blade lose the charm and appeal it has.

Grayson writes in a soothing smooth tone that just engrosses you into her world. I don’t know how many times I was like okay I am stopping at this chapter then I come to the end of it and I am like um…one more chapter! A perfect book to curl up with and read on a rainy day, which is what I did.

My overall rating 4 stars

    Review

Meant to read the first book (Bound by Scars and Secrets) before I read this second installment am reviewing I accidentally picked up Bound by Promises & Lies first and started reading none the wiser. I was a couple of chapters in when I realized this was book 2, not book 1. I winced because I am a stickler for reading in order, but it was too late. I was already invested in Sienna Archer’s world and characters. I had to see Alathea and Lidja journey through till the end!

I must say Lidja has to be my official favorite female character in a book of all time. I have never had one until now either.  She resonated with me written perfectly real – strong-ass-willed, yet vulnerable weak, and unapologetically herself. Her conversations with whomever she comes in contact with are entertainingly priceless.

Bound by Promises & Lies is an engrossing read you’ll forget this is a YA fantasy. It also works well as a stand-alone almost since I didn’t read the first book and was not that lost.

Archer writes with a warm welcome tone that instantly draws you in. I felt instantly welcomed into her world and instantly fell in love with her characters (and this is book 2 remind you!) That says something about a writer’s writing prowess.

While sure there were some points in the story that might have made more sense if I read book 1 first it was minuscule. Plus it only acted as an enticement for me to go back and read book 1 to get the whole story. Bound by Promises & Lies ends on a bit of a cliffhanger too so I am excited to see what Archer has next in the realms of magic world.

Book Review: Deep Inside The Blues: Photographs And Interviews by Margo Cooper

    Hosted by Indie Promotions

In honor of Black History Month, I decided to honor part of my heritage. When the chance to review Deep Inside The Blues came upon me I was, yes this is it! Growing up I was familiar with the Blues. There was no music unturned in my family. I remember Blues Legend B.B. King vividly as he made a guest appearance either on the Muppet Show or Sesame Street when I was a kid. I then had a chance to work with one of his daughters Shirley King so my knowledge of the blues culture grew. I learned it was more than a culture, it is history. So If you think you know the Blues, well, you might not know the blues like you thought.

Deep Inside the Blues collects thirty-four of Margo Cooper’s interviews with blues artists and is illustrated with over 160 of her photographs, many published here for the first time. For thirty years, Cooper has been documenting the lives of blues musicians, their families and homes, neighborhoods, festivals, and gigs. Her photographic work combines iconic late-career images of many legendary figures including Bo Diddley, Honeyboy Edwards, B. B. King, Pinetop Perkins, and Hubert Sumlin with youthful shots of Cedric Burnside, Shemekia Copeland, and Sharde Thomas, themselves now in their thirties and forties. During this time, the Burnside and Turner families and other Mississippi artists such as T-Model Ford, James “Super Chikan” Johnson, and L. C. Ulmer entered the national and international spotlight, ensuring the powerful connection between authentic Delta, Hill Country, and Piney Woods blues musicians and their audience.

Abigail Hirst, a city reporter, returns to her hometown to take over Second Hand Rose, a quintessential antique store, following the sad passing of her beloved Grandmother, Rose.

This new life seems perfect for Abigail and her trusted terrier Jake, until she starts to notice strange happenings.

Gruesome deaths and mysterious disappearances are catching up with this chocolate-box town named Friendship, as Abigail digs deeper in her investigations.

Time is quickly running out for the fate of the whole town but only facing up to her own dark past, can she truly help Friendship and the people she loves most.

    REVIEW

The town of Friendship is the best little town. All towns have secrets though and when Abigail returns home upon the passing of her grandmother Rose she takes over her grandmother’s shop soon learning grandma had a secret. The whole town does. Can Abigail stop the monster that lives within?

Absolutely sweet and gruesome! I found myself loving this book glued to every word. As a reader, Fox kept me engaged all the way through. Even the breather moments have your attention showing Fox is an excellent storyteller.

While I wished for a bit more character detail from her characters Fox still gives enough to satisfy you before she throws something horrifying at you. At that point, you pretty much don’t care because you are partly traumatized, yet Fox wrote it so eloquently it was kind of poetic.

    REVIEW

What is Tennyson’s secret? Author A.H. Benjamin guides us through a silly wacky list of what it could possibly be. The secret is magical though and it seems only Tennyson’s cat may know the truth.

Targeted for ages five and below this easy-read book will definitely light up a young reader’s life. We along with Benjamin try to guess Tennyson’s BIG Secret and some of the guesses are downright silly. Can Tennyson’s secret REALLY be that his hobby horse is faster than the fastest racehorse?

Trimarco’s illustrations bring it all to life with his big bright, vibrate-style art that will delight in young audiences especially when the story is read out loud. A definitely fun book to have in your young one’s book collection.

Gearing up to fight back against this destroyer of fun, Bunso makes surprising discoveries about the Mumu (and himself) in this fun, comic-like picture book that introduces children to Filipino culture and words.

    REVIEW

Bunso has a problem his older sister keeps telling scary stories and is now telling him the MUMU is going to get him if he doesn’t behave. Same with his Mom and Dad, The MUMU will get you if you don’t behave! His older brother just won’t let him play with his video games. Is this the curse of the MUMU? Wait what is a MUMU? Bunso is about to find out!

This book is the most adorable ever! While targeted at young children this book can be loved by all ages.  I read it to my book-loving ten-year-old twin boys and they really loved it. I confess I loved it!

Drawing from Filipino heritage and folklore Valdez creates a book for the whole family. Children will like the cool comic book-like drawing and Valdez writes with child-like dialogue that will reel young readers in. Parents and maybe older kids with like the worked in Fillipino culture and words therefore expanding their minds or finding a kindred spirit in Bunso’s world being Fillipino-American. Bunso Meets A MuMu looks like it’s the first in a series of Bunso Meets stories introducing other mythical monsters from Filipino culture. I for one can’t wait.

    REVIEW

A silver winner of the Global Ebook Awards and Winner of the Dan Poynter Legacy Award If Only My Eyes Could Speak is a gut-wrenching read. A short but powerful read this book speaks volumes.

Reading like we are peeking into a young girl’s journal Sadiee shares her personal poetry, and prose (letters) she wrote as a young girl going through physical and sexual abuse trying to make sense of it all.

Her writings start at the age of 14 and go through to 17, and the words and things Sadiee writes should not be in the mind of a child so young.  Yet, her prominent piece “Letter To My Mother” written at the tender age of 14 explains it all.

It took me a couple of days to recover after reading this book. Haunted by the eloquence of young Sadiee’s words you FEEL each syllable she writes, and the therapeutic release she feels as she writes them.

A beautiful piece to show we can overcome. We can take the bad and make it good.

My overall rating is 5 stars and beyond.

    REVIEW

Written like an epic manga The Crimson Maiden: Swordmasters’ Legacy Book 1 is an epic fantasy adventure with a hint of mystery. I totally fell into the magical world of Ariandor and its floating archipelagos. Here we meet 16-year-old fiery redhead Arianna on her way to Heincraft Academy of Swordcraft to become a master swordsmaster. While there Arianna has an ulterior motive to solve the mystery behind the disappearance of her father who attended the Academy himself.

Looking through the school archives leads to her father’s journal, meeting a mystical beast named Red, and a map that could lead her and her new friends to the mystery of what happened to Arianna’s lost father. But also stumbling into a power Arianna didn’t know she had as an evil plot brews to unleash a dark entity that was banished long ago.

M.V. Grimm does a phenomenal job of world-building as you feel completely immersed in this fantasy world via your imagination. His characters while classic are likable, and Grimm delivers a plot twist revealed in the epilogue that I did not see coming. It made me giddy with glee as I just love it when an author pulls the rug out from under me.

There were parts though that I thought dialogue might have fit in better than just written out like a recap. Otherwise, this was a fun escape read and I am eager to return to the world of Ariandor to find out what happens next!

    REVIEW

Gingerbread is an erotica novella with class, not crass. We meet successful, handsome Sebastian helping a friend overcome his breakup agrees to join him at a club. Clubs are not Sebastian’s thing, and when he discovers the club is a fetish club, he is all the more mortified. Upset and about to head out, that is, until Gwen enters the room. Gwen also sees Sebastian as a new face to the club and saunters over, enticing him into a world he never dreamed of. It wasn’t just that; Gwen herself just made submitting so easy.

To Gwen, something about Sebastian’s honesty and adoration of her made their playtime together more than just playtime. Could they be more?

Ash writes with a beautiful blend of sexy sultriness, not overpowering that there is a charming ever-after story underneath. In fact, Ash seems to be writing with a mission as Gingerbread begins with a note from the author giving a little introduction into the BDSM world, dismissing what the public media has often portrayed BDSM as. She even interweaves more knowledge into the story effortlessly when Gwen discusses with Sebastian what it will mean to be her submissive little boy. It was absolutely a delicious scene.

Gingerbread is a hot and steamy BDSM fairytale—a standout among the endless sea of erotica that will satisfy you.

My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.
